Thomas joins stellar field in WGC-FEDEX

Defending WGC-FEDEX St. Jude champion Justin Thomas, British Open champion Collin Morikawa and world No. 15-ranked Rory Mcilroy committed to play in the World Golf Championsh­ips-fedex St. Jude Invitation­al, tournament officials announced Thursday.

This new string of commitment­s means that three of the top-five ranked players in the world are set for the tournament at TPC Southwind from Aug. 5-8, including Thomas, Morikawa and Dustin Johnson. World No. 1-ranked Jon Rahm had committed but withdrew this week.

Thomas is makinghis third consecutiv­e appearance. He shot 13-under-par 267 to win a year ago. The Alabama graduate is ranked world No. 4. He earned his qualification with a victory at The 2021 Players Championsh­ip in March and has 14 Tour wins in his career.

Morikawa, the 2021 British Open champion, is ranked No. 3. He earned his qualification for the tournament with a victory at the World Golf Championsh­ips-workday Championsh­ip at The

Concession in February. Morikawa has eight top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour this season. This will mark Morikawa's second consecutiv­e appearance at TPC Southwind.

Mcilroy, the 2019 Fedexcup champion, became exempt with his win at the Wells Fargo Championsh­ip in May. He has 19 career PGA Tour wins and six top-10 finishes this season, including tying for fifth at the Masters. The Irish golfer will make his third consecutiv­e appearance at TPC Southwind.
