Memphis makes Time’s list of ‘World’s Greatest Places’
Memphis is “in the midst of an exciting evolution,” according to Time magazine, which placed the Bluff City on its list of “The World’s Greatest Places.”
Published on Tuesday, the third annual edition of the list – highlighting 100 must-visit travel spots around the world – included Memphis along with other global destinations from Berlin to Bangkok, and top U.S. spots including Seattle and Santa Fe, New Mexico.
In a statement noting the Time plaudit, Kevin Kane, president and CEO of Memphis Tourism, said: “This is a great honor for our city and destination from a globally recognized media outlet.”
“This accolade from Time showcases our diverse culinary scene and new hotel development that combine to create an authentic and exciting experience for travelers.”
Memphis was the only Tennessee city to make the list.
According to Time, the magazine “solicited nominations of places — including countries, regions, cities and towns – from its international network of correspondents and contributors, with an eye toward those offering new and exciting experiences.”
The accompanying blurb on Memphis, titled “Expanding on a Legacy,” was written by the magazine’s Jenny Peters following a visit to the city this spring.
The article name checked Hyatt Centric Beale Street, the Memphis Chess Club’s Downtown location, as well as the Bain Barbecue food truck in Binghampton.
Peters also made mention of several amenities in the historic South Main Arts District, including Memphis Central Station Hotel.
“Now, in addition to serving rail customers, the station also houses the Hilton-run Central Station Hotel,” she wrote, “which features both a listening lounge with 500 vinyl albums celebrating the city’s musical legacy and Bishop, a French fine-dining spot from local James Beard darlings Andrew Ticer and Michael Hudman.”
