Harry Garland Grubbs peacefully left this earthly life to enter his heavenly home with Jesus on August 10, 2021. He was born 84 years ago in what he called a “suburb” of Abbeville, Mississippi to Cleveland C. Grubbs and Bessie Keel Grubbs. This was just one of a plethora of his quips as he was revered as a master the “Dad Joke” He reveled in bringing joy to those around him whether it was through humor, music or service. He proudly served his country in the Tennessee Air National Guard for 42 years, 7 months and 1 day. He loved the Guard and his friends in the TNANG and kept in touch with many of them after he retired. In fact, he and a guard buddy formed a music group in the 1970’s in which he sang and played the “gutbucket” washtub bass. He enjoyed music throughout his life and he sang and played his gutbucket at nursing homes and at gatherings at local musicians. One of his favorite ways to relax was in completing crossword puzzles. As a Mensa member, he had a tremendous vocabulary that allowed him to solve the puzzles with ease. He also enjoyed being outdoors and often took the family to camp and fish. Upon seeing a new body of water he often remarked, “I’d like to fish that little ol pond!” In his early 30’s, he amazed many when he bowled a perfect 300 game for which he was awarded a trophy & commemorative ring. As a cancer survivor, Harry was very involved, along with his wife, Mary Louise, in raising money for the American Cancer Society. Together they coordinated local Relay for Life events which included a memorial golf tournament sponsored by their team. After he retired, he wanted to help other cancer patients by driving them to doctor appointments. Harry was a very active and dedicated member of his church where he served as a Deacon and a greeter. He was thrilled to welcome members and visitors to worship and continued to do so even during the pandemic. He was a good and faithful servant. Harry graduated from Frayser High School in Memphis in the Class of 1955 where he was a member of the football team and an emerging artist. Harry loved his friends and family well and enriched the lives of all who knew him.
