Mary Gene Rogers Matheny

COVINGTON - June 24, 1930 – August 19, 2021 Mrs. Mary Gene passed away on August 19, 2021 at her home in Covington, TN, the place she loved to be more than any other. She was an elementary school teacher for over 20 years at Covington Grammar School and Fraser Elementary School. She continued working in her retirement years at Mcdonalds, Westside Grocery, and her favorite part-time volunteer work was at her beloved Covington First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed her garden, the outdoors, and loving her family and friends. She was a lifelong member of the church and served in various roles including nursery supervisor, pianist for the Friendship Class, and was a recipient of the Unsung Hero Award in 2004 for unselfish contributions to her church family.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Herman (Doc) Williams Matheny, her parents Walter A. and Emma Rogers of Covington, her sister Doris Ann Parkinson of Kingston, TN, and her brother Walter A. Rogers of Covington. She is survived by her children Mary Glynn Allen (Chuck) of Kernersville, NC; Alice Ann Taylor (Bill) of Cottontown, TN; and Harvey Williams Matheny (Molly) of Bartlett, TN. She is also survived by her grandchildren Kenneth Allen (Katie), Sarah Williams, Cayce Taylor, Keri Taylor, Kellie Taylor, Harrison W. Matheny (Lauren), Anna Evans (Matthew), and Lamar Matheny, and 9 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at Maley-yarbrough Funeral Home on Sunday, August 22 from 3 to 5 PM. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 AM on Monday, August 23 in the sanctuary of Covington First United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Covington First United Methodist Church.
