City of Memphis boosts access for Liberty Bowl
The city of Memphis finalized parking plans on Thursday for Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium this season that will use three off-site parking lots as well as a ride-share shuttle to and from the University of Memphis.
The lots, which will be cash only, were added due to ongoing construction for the Liberty Park project on stadium grounds. Fans can park at the Coca-cola Plant (499 S. Hollywood Blvd.), Tobey Park (2599 Avery Ave.) and the City of Memphis Surplus Lot (2540 Avery Ave.) for home games and the Southern Heritage Classic.
Memphis football season parking pass holders can still park in the stadium lots they've purchased for the entire season. Tailgating will only be permitted in those lots.
The shuttles will run from the Memphis campus four hours before kickoff and continue until one hour after the game ends. A round-trip shuttle ticket will cost $5 per person but parking is free at the university's lots at 3854 Central Ave. or 597 Goodman St. In June, City of Memphis chief operating officer Doug Mcgowen said it was possible fans could shuttle to games from Memphis International Airport. However, the airport was not mentioned Thursday as a shuttle destination.
Liberty Bowl general manager Thomas Carrier said the three lots create 1,500 additional parking spaces while 4,000 on-campus parking spaces will be available for those who prefer the shuttles. The 5,500 total spaces help offset the estimated 3,000 Liberty Bowl parking spots that Mcgowen said were eliminated due to the Liberty Park project.
