Dr. Andrew Herron Miller, 96, passed away in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. on September 1, 2021. He was born July 20, 1925 in Webster Groves, MO. to Dr. Robert H. Miller and Katharine Rothrock Miller. He was raised in Memphis, Tn. graduating from Central High School. As part of the V-12 program in World War II, he attended Southwestern College of Memphis (now Rhodes College) where he was a member of SAE fraternity and then subsequently sent to Tulane University. He obtained his medical degree at age 21 from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine graduating first in his class and Aoa-the scholastic honorary medical fraternity. He completed his internship in general surgery at the University of Pennsylvania Hospitals and his residency at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He then started his orthopedic residency at the Campbell Clinic in Memphis only to have his training interrupted by the Korean War. At age 25, he was a Lieutenant J. G. naval officer and orthopedic surgeon in the 8055 MASH unit. While he didn’t describe his time in Korea as enjoyable, he acknowledged that the experience added immensely to his training. After his military service, he finished his orthopedic training at Campbell Clinic. In 1954, he married Stella Scott Pharr and they moved to Nashville, Tn. where he practiced his profession for 33 years. In addition to his many hospital affiliations, he particularly enjoyed his position as a clinical instructor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Rehabilitation at Vanderbilt University. After retiring from his practice, he worked for 10 years as an evaluator for the Social Security Administration disability section. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Nashville and Hillwood Country Club. He was an avid tennis player and golfer and he would readily say that his enjoyment exceeded his talents. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 48 years, Scott, and his brother, Dr. Thomas Rothrock Miller of Lexington, Ky. He is survived by his sister, Katharine Miller Meacham Conover of St. Petersburg, FI., his son, Dr. Robert H. Miller (Nancy) of Memphis, Tn., and daughter, Rose Coleman Miller Legerton (Chip) of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. and 5 grandchildren. A private family memorial service will be held and burial will be in Forest Hills Cemetery in Memphis, Tn.
