Memphis Brooks Museum of Art is acquiring two Roman relief sculptures from the 4th century. The rare, early Christian marble works will go on view March 30, Easter Sunday. The relief panels would have been part of a larger marble sarcophagus. One represents The Good Shepherd of the Old Testament with a ram on his shoulders, a symbol of God’s substitution when Abraham offered Isaac for sacrifice. The other, The Good Shepherd of the New Testament, is holding a lamb, which embodies Christ as the Lamb of God. The Assisi Foundation of Memphis provided a grant to Brooks to acquire the pieces.
