DENVER – Lobbyist Dita D. Beard had a heart seizure Sunday after testifying from her hospital bed that the White House had called the Internatio­nal Telephone & Telegraph Corp. (ITT) about underwriti­ng the Republican convention. The seven senators questionin­g her said they were suspending further hearings and would return to Washington Monday.

75 years ago — 1947

FORT WORTH, Texas – A 28-year-old civilian test pilot who stuck to the controls at the risk of his life late Wednesday safely landed the crippled, six-engine B-36 bombing plane, largest in the world. Twelve of the 14 crewmen aboard the 139ton sky monster had parachuted. B.A Erickson, chief test pilot for Consolidat­ed Vulteo Aircraft Corp., set down the B-36 on the main runway at the air field like a feather despite a cracked gear in the landing mechanism. 100 years ago — 1922

A note of warning alike to the nation and to the church, both of which he declared are threatened by the spirit of materialis­m, was sounded in the sermon preached yesterday morning at Linden Avenue Christian Church by Peter Clark Macfarlane. To the people of Memphis, as to the people of all parts of the English-speaking world, Mr. Macfarlane is best known as a writer of most delightful­ly readable fiction. But he is a versatile person of many accomplish­ments and has followed many callings. But he has also served as a minister in the Christian Church in California. It was while he was connected with the church as pastor that his friendship with Dr. Walter M. White, pastor of Linden Avenue Church, started. 125 years ago — 1897
