Ole Miss football coaches will earn more than $12.5M
OXFORD — The Ole Miss athletics department will spend more than $12.5 million on its on-field football coaching staff this season.
According to documents obtained by the Clarion Ledger, coach Lane Kiffin and his 10 on-field assistants will combine to earn $12,675,526 in base salary by the end of January 2023. Kiffin makes the majority of this money, with a base salary of $7.25 million this season.
But that still leaves more than $5.4 million for his on-field assistants, good for an average of more than $500,000 per assistant.
Co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach John David Baker is due for a significant pay-raise. In his 2021 contract, Baker made $375,000. In 2022, Baker will make $545,526. He's the Rebels' only coach slated to earn more in 2022 than 2023, when his base salary decreases to $510,000.
New hires Maurice Crum, Sam Carter and Marty Biagi all have more conventional contracts. Crum, the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, will make $450,000 in 2022 and $475,000 in 2023. Carter, the cornerbacks coach, will make $430,000 in both 2022 and 2023. Biagi, the special teams coordinator, will earn $350,000 in 2022 and $375,000 in 2023.
All four coaches also have incentives built into their contracts based on where Ole Miss lands in the postseason. As coordinators, Crum and Baker stand to earn:
h $25,000 for an SEC Championship game appearance OR $50,000 for an SEC Championship game win
h $15,000 for a Birmingham Bowl or Independence Bowl berth
h $20,000 for a Taxslayer Bowl, Outback Bowl, Belk Bowl, Music City Bowl, Texas Bowl or Liberty Bowl berth h $25,000 for a Citrus Bowl berth h $30,000 for a New Year's Six berth outside the College Football Playoff
h $50,000 for an appearance in the College Football Playoff OR $100,000 for an appearance in the College Football Playoff championship game OR $150,000 for a College Football Playoff
championship win
As assistant coaches, Biagi and Carter could earn:
h $10,000 for an SEC Championship game appearance OR $25,000 for an SEC Championship game win
h $10,000 for a Birmingham Bowl or Independence Bowl berth
h $15,000 for a Taxslayer Bowl, Outback Bowl, Belk Bowl, Music City Bowl, Texas Bowl or Liberty Bowl berth h $20,000 for a Citrus Bowl berth h $25,000 for a New Year's Six berth outside the College Football Playoff
h $30,000 for an appearance in the College Football Playoff OR $60,000 for an appearance in the College Football Playoff championship game OR $80,000 for a College Football Playoff championship win
As the Clarion Ledger previously reported in February, Ole Miss will pay codefensive coordinator Chris Partridge $1.2 million in 2022 and co-offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr., $800,000. Assistant head coach Derrick Nix will earn $500,000, defensive line coach Randall Joyner will earn $450,000, running backs coach Marquel Blackwell will earn $400,000 and offensive line coach Jake Thornton will receive $300,000.
Additionally, head strength and conditioning coach Nick Savage will earn $350,000.
Kiffin's contract, as approved in December, mandates Ole Miss spend "a minimum of $3.5 million" on support staff salaries and the salary pool must remain at or above the seventh-largest in the SEC.
This year's salary pool goes well over the $3.5 million minimum.
