25 years ago — 1997

A South Memphis neighborho­od group says it’s tired of being dumped on and wants to know why employees of a billboard company used a clean vacant lot on Mississipp­i Boulevard to discard huge remnants of paper. The lot in the 1100 block of Mississipp­i near Mclemore had been clean less than two weeks in late October when Lorene Jones, president of South Memphis Memphis Citizens United for Action, noticed large sheets of blue paper strewn across it. The neighborho­od group cleaned up the lot with the help of inmates.

50 years ago — 1972

PISA, Italy – The renowned Leaning Tower will soon be trussed into a harness of steel cables to keep it from toppling while a long-range cure for its ills is sought. Before the end of the year, Italy will announce an internatio­nal contest for a project to consolidat­e the soil on which the eight-story tower stands so that the tackle can eventually be taken off.

75 years ago — 1947

LONDON – The long-awaited wedding day of Princess Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatte­n — now H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh — dawned Thursday on a London whose weather was chilly and gray, but whose heart was warm and full. Thousands of Britons set the tone for the memorable day by cheerfully defying the sullen skies in all-night scrambling for front-line positions from which they might watch the magnificen­t wedding procession to Westminste­r Abbey. 100 years ago — 1922

General Luke E. Wright, soldier, statesman, builder of Memphis and one of the South’s most distinguis­hed citizens, was laid to rest yesterday, following services in St. Peter’s Catholic Church at 2:30 o’clock. Seldom has St. Peter’s sheltered so many people coming to pay their respect and evidence their love for a man among men, who had the human touch and whose friends, therefore, were gathered from all walks of life.

125 years ago — 1897

Rev. Father Twohig of St. Peter’s Church has received official notificati­on from the very reverend Dominican provincial, Father Kearney, that he has been appointed pastor of the Holy Trinity Church, Somerset, Ohio.
