Michael Jordan is the richest athlete in the world, regaining the top spot in the Forbes list for the fifth time in six years and displacing Mike Tyson at No. 1. Jordan will earn $78.3 million in 1997, the magazine estimated, getting $31.3 million from the Chicago Bulls and $47 million from endorsemen­ts and other income. Forbes put heavyweigh­t Evander Holyfield in second place at $54.3 million. He earned $53 million in prize money and $1.3 million in endorsemen­ts.

50 years ago — 1972

Belinda Ann Berry, a 20-year-old junior at the University of Mississipp­i, was crowned Miss Liberty Bowl last night at the Holiday Inn-rivermont. She will be the official Liberty Bowl representa­tive and reign at the Dec. 18 game between Iowa State and Georgia Tech at Memphis Memorial Stadium. 75 years ago — 1947

The best of hundreds of thousands of snapshots submitted in the 1947 Newspaper National Snapshot Awards will go on exhibition here Dec. 14 at the Brooks Memorial Art Gallery. The exhibit is sponsored by The Commercial Appeal, which participat­ed in the nationwide contest. The exhibit is made up of 82 prints, among them the 12 major prize winners and the 70 winners of $50 Special Merit Awards. Of the $10,000 in prizes offered in the Newspaper National Snapshot Awards, the pictures which comprise the exhibit captured $7,900.

100 years ago — 1922

CAMDEN, Tenn. – E.G. “Lige” Flowers, high sheriff of Benton County, was arrested here tonight at 7:45 o’clock after he had retired on a charge of obstructin­g, opposing and assaulting a deputy United States marshal. The arrest was made by John D. Roberts, a deputy United States marshal from Memphis. He will be arraigned at 11 o’clock Friday morning. The arrest of the sheriff grew out of a serious encounter between Mr. Flowers and Jack Davis, a deputy U.S. marshal from Jackson, Nov. 21 when the government officer came down to take a prisoner being held in the Camden jail on a charge of violating the liquor law.

125 years ago — 1897

The action of the City Council in passing on Monday night a resolution declaring its purpose to purchase the waterworks and put it in the hands of the city absolute control of the city’s water supply created surprise. It was surprising not because it was not eminently reasonable, but only because it was unexpected.
