Here’s a look at former undersized Memphis area guards
Here’s a list of former Memphis area high school basketball point guards who were undersized. Despite the size disadvantage, each went on to play Division I basketball and a few on to the NBA.
Kennedy Chandler
Chandler, 5-foot-11, played high school basketball at Briarcrest for three years before joining Sunrise Academy (Kansas) for his senior season. He played just one season with Tennessee before being selected in the second round of the 2022 NBA Draft by the Memphis Grizzlies. During his rookie season, he’s appeared in 22 games, averaging just under 10 minutes a game, 2.7 points per game and 2.1 assists per game.
Chris Chiozza
Chiozza, 5-11, starred at White Station during his high school years. He went on to play at Florida. Chiozza has spent time in both the NBA G League and the NBA, winning a 2022 NBA championship with the Golden State Warriors. He’s currently with the Long Island Nets in the G League.
Mark Freeman
Freeman, 5-11, played high school basketball at Southwind. He’s currently at Morehead State for his senior season.
He played one season at Illinois State and two seasons at Tennessee State. Freeman was ranked a 3-star prospect in high school. At Morehead State, Freeman is averaging 15.9 points per game.
Tyler Harris
Harris, 5-9, played high school basketball at Cordova before playing at Memphis under Penny Hardaway. He’s now at South Florida for his final year of
eligibility. He’s averaging 16.6 points this season with the Bulls.
Joe Jackson
Jackson, 6-1, starred at White Station High before playing his college ball at Memphis. At Memphis, his standout 2013 season led him to be named the Conference USA Player of the Year. He spent time in the NBA G League with the North Arizona Suns.
Alex Lomax
Lomax, 6-0 , played under Penny Hardaway at Memphis East and followed his high school coach to Memphis, where he’s playing his final season.
