Briarcrest boys still No. 1 in Memphis area basketball rankings

- Wynston Wilcox

An ice storm swept through the Midsouth last week, freezing all of our Memphis area high school basketball boys teams out of games. While some did play Friday night, the majority of area basketball teams have games to make up this week with the district and region tournaments beginning in a few weeks.

Though there weren’t many games played last week, here’s a look at this week’s boys basketball power rankings.

1. Briarcrest (27-2): The Saints remain No. 1, getting wins against Christian Brothers and MUS last week.

2. Fayette-ware (18-6): The Wildcats remain No. 2 in this week’s poll. Led by Damarien Yates, the Wildcats are still undefeated in district play and have won seven of their last eight.

3. Lausanne (22-2): The Lynx, led by seniors Jamarcus Powell and Seth Grandberry, have won their last 12 games, to remain undefeated in region play.

4. Bartlett (17-8): The Panthers remain at No. 4. They have games against Cordova, Collierville and Arlington remaining this season.

5. Germantown (17-5): The Red Devils return to the top 5. They have games against Southwind, Collierville, Cordova, Arlington and Kirby left in the regular season.

6. Memphis University School (16-6): The Owls drop one spot to No. 6 in the rankings after losing to Briarcrest over the weekend.

7. Christian Brothers (17-6): Christian Brothers remain No. 7 after its 6850 loss to Briarcrest on Friday night.

8. Memphis East (16-8): The Mustangs remain No. 8 and have games against White Station, Kingsbury and Central left in the regular season.

9. Houston (15-6): The Mustangs remain No. 9 after seniors Mavrick Miller and Brock Vice helped them defeat Collierville 70-63.

10. Overton (19-9): Overton lands at No. 10 and still remains in control of its destiny in District 16-4A play with games against Central, White Station and Whitehaven remaining.
