Memphis City Schools had a $5.37 million operating deficit last year, and officials have projected a $6.3 million shortfall this year, according to the school system’s annual audit and financial report.

50 years ago — 1973

Formation of a Memphis Police Associatio­n which “eventually” will seek recognitio­n from the city as a bargaining agent for lower-ranking policemen was disclosed last night. A policeman, who did not want to be identified, said the associatio­n “is not a union and will not be a union,” but will be a private, nonprofit, unincorpor­ated group. He also said it will be self-financed with no outside support.

75 years ago — 1948 WASHINGTON – Scores of large

corporatio­ns and a galaxy of Hollywood stars were named Sunday among the big-time taxpayers to whom the Treasury made refunds in the fiscal year 1947. Biggest single refund went to United States Steel Corp., which got $63,580,904. Runner-up was Westinghou­se Electric Corp., which received $57,398,182. The Treasury is required by law to give Congress an annual report of all persons receiving tax refunds of $500 or more. The list submitted to the House Executive Expenditur­es Committee Sunday covered $2,882,735,904 in refunds during the 12 months ending last June 30.

100 years ago — 1923

DAYTON, Ohio – Lieut. John A. Macready and Oakley Kelley, Mccook Field pilots, holders of the world’s record for sustained airplane flight, will hop off at

Wilbur Wright Field tomorrow morning if conditions are favorable, in an effort to best their record of 35 hours, 16 minutes, made at San Diego, Calif., last fall.

125 years ago — 1898

The Cumberland Telephone and Telegraph Company has bought the Great Southern Telephone Company, which operates in Mississipp­i and Louisiana. The deal was consummate­d yesterday afternoon at a meeting of the directors of the former company, held at its central offices at Nashville. The completion of this deal is of vast importance to Memphis. It will eventually put this city in direct connection with every city and town between Memphis and New Orleans on both the Illinois Central and Yazoo & Mississipp­i roads, besides many other points.
