25 years ago — 1998

Normally, when an angler catches one fish there's not much to talk about. But then, the one bass Chuck Hannaford of Germantown caught recently in a Bass Anglers Sportsman Society event in Mississipp­i has generated a lot of talk. Hannaford, 46, caught a 10pound, 2-ounce largemouth bass in a BASS tournament on Barnett Reservoir near Jackson. Not only was it the biggest caught in the tourney, but it also might be the biggest bass weighed in at any Barnett Reservoir event. Hannaford, a Christian psychologi­st, is working with the Mississipp­i Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks to determine if the bass is the biggest to come out of the 33,000-acre reservoir.

The Rev. Donald E. Mowery, executive director of Youth Services in Memphis, Inc., yesterday was presented the Memphis Sertoma Club's 1973 Service to Mankind award. Known to thousands of youngsters as "Father Don," the Episcopali­an priest is moderator of a Sunday night radio program called "Talk it Out" on WHBQ. At the presentati­on at the Sheraton-peabody, he was cited for his 10 years of work in Memphis with troubled youths.

LOWELL OBSERVATOR­Y, FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Dr. V.M. Slipher, director of the Lowell Observator­y — center of astronomic­al research on the planet Mars, Saturday told of strange conditions on the little red planet now passing fairly close to Earth. He told Internatio­nal News Service: "The most remarkable thing we have been observing on Mars is the series of marked changes in some of the dark areas and in the canal-like markings." 100 years ago — 1923
