Memphis’ 2023 football schedule includes a Friday home game vs. Navy

- Evan Barnes

Memphis football released its 2023 schedule Tuesday and it will start AAC play Sept. 14 hosting Navy for a Thursday night game.

The Tigers’ non-conference schedule was already known with their season opener Sept. 2 hosting Bethune-cookman and road opener at Arkansas State on Sept. 9. Memphis also faces Missouri on Sept. 23 in St. Louis and hosts Boise State on Sept. 30.

After Navy, the Tigers’ next conference game is hosting defending AAC champion Tulane on Oct. 13 in a Friday night game, before a two-game road slate against new conference additions. The Tigers travel to UAB on Oct. 21, a revival of the “Battle of the Bones” rivalry from 1997-2012. Memphis then heads to North Texas on Oct. 28.

UAB, North Texas, Charlotte, Rice, UTSA and Florida Atlantic will join the AAC this season with Houston, Cincinnati and Central Florida leaving for the Big 12.

The Tigers’ November slate consists of hosting South Florida (Nov. 4), at Charlotte (Nov. 11), home vs. SMU (Nov. 18) and the regular season finale at Temple on Nov. 24 or 25. The AAC championship will be on Dec. 2

Kickoff times and TV information for the first three games and the non-saturday games will be finalized by June 1. The final date for the Temple game will be announced by the AAC on Oct. 9.

Four of the Tigers’ first six games are at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. Navy is also the Tigers’ first AAC opponent for the second consecutive season. The Tigers won’t play the first week of October for their earliest NON-COVID 19 related break since 2015 when they were off the second week of October before its upset win over Ole Miss.

Memphis, which went 7-6 last season, will have six games at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium but will also be the home team in St. Louis against Missouri.

The Tigers won the First Responder Bowl in December after finishing eighth in the AAC.
