Brains in gear and bodies that aren’t were the focus of Monday night’s School Board meeting, where board members heard reports on honors courses and physical education for elementary kids. In the report on honors courses, board members heard evidence that some Memphis City Schools are offering honors courses that aren’t up to snuff. In some cases, the board was told, smart students are piled into a class and labeled “honors,“although the coursework is no harder than that of a regular-level course.
50 years ago — 1973
When the Junior League of Memphis planned a party for its 50th anniversary, it stopped at nothing short of a whopper of a celebration. Members of the league — sustainers and provisional members as well as the actives — turned out in full force last night for the super-duper party that had been a year in planning. Holiday Hall of the Holiday Inn-rivermont was the setting.
75 years ago — 1948
Unless the Veterans Administration obtains 54 new physicians for Tennessee by June, Kennedy Veterans Hospital will lose 23 physicians and Veterans Hospital on Lamar three. The hospitals were notified of this yesterday by Dr. Frank B. Brewer, Veterans Administration medical doctor at Atlanta. The shortage of physicians is threatened by the fact that 54 doctors assigned to the V.A. two years ago by the Army and Navy are to leave the agency in June.

HAVANA, Cuba – The United States Court of Inquiry, acting on the explosion which destroyed the U.S.S. Maine, killing more than 200 officers and men, is of the opinion the disaster was caused by a floating mine in Havana Harbor.
