25 years ago — 1998 Neighborhoods can petition the city for speed humps to slow traffic on residential streets under a program approved Tuesday night by the City Council. The request can be initiated by a single resident, but a petition signed by at least 75 percent of the households and businesses in the affected area will be required before the devices are installed at city expense. 50 years ago — 1973
WOUNDED KNEE, S.D. – The Indians holding Wounded Knee said Saturday night they would abandon their five-day siege if the Justice Department agreed to a proposal drawn up by the Indians, their former hostages and local clergymen. The Justice Department would also need to agree not to make mass arrests, they said.

In a celebration to mark the 100th year of Memphis schools, Watkins Overton, president of the Memphis Board of Education, yesterday announced plans for a gigantic citywide observance of the centenary in the system’s 52 public schools with their 43,000 students soon after the new term opens next September. Mr. Overton made a few comparisons with a century ago . . . four little schools then, more than a half-hundred big buildings
now; less than 300 pupils vs. 43,000; 1,200 teachers now as against only four then; an annual budget now of more than $5,000,000 and buildings and grounds having a reproduction value, by conservative estimate, of $20,000,000.
