Texas Tech suspends men’s basketball coach over racially insensitiv­e comment

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech suspended men’s basketball coach Mark Adams on Sunday over “an inappropri­ate, unacceptab­le, and racially insensitiv­e comment” he made to a player.

Athletic director Kirby Hocutt said he was made aware of the incident Friday and issued a written reprimand before deciding to suspend Adamsto investigat­e further.

The incident occurred in a meeting between Adams and a player, who wasn’t identified, the school said in a news release.

“Adams was encouragin­g the student-athlete to be more receptive to coaching and referenced Bible verses about workers, teachers, parents, and slaves serving their masters,” the statement said. “Adams immediatel­y addressed this with the team and apologized.”

The school didn’t say who would fill in for Adams as coach for the Big 12 tournament. Texas Tech (16-15, 5-13 Big 12) is the ninth seed and plays West Virginia on Wednesday night in Kansas City, Missouri.

MLB will not discipline White Sox pitcher following investigat­ion

Major League Baseball will not discipline Chicago White Sox pitcher Mike Clevinger, the league announced Sunday,

after an investigat­ion that began in 2022 could not determine that the pitcher violated its joint policy on domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse. Clevinger, 32, was accused by a former partner of physical abuse and that he threw a wad of used chewing tobacco at their child. MLB began its investigat­ion last fall and the White Sox were not aware of the allegation­s when they signed Clevinger to a one-year, $12 million deal on Nov. 27.
