Texas Tech suspends men’s basketball coach over racially insensitive comment
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech suspended men’s basketball coach Mark Adams on Sunday over “an inappropriate, unacceptable, and racially insensitive comment” he made to a player.
Athletic director Kirby Hocutt said he was made aware of the incident Friday and issued a written reprimand before deciding to suspend Adamsto investigate further.
The incident occurred in a meeting between Adams and a player, who wasn’t identified, the school said in a news release.
“Adams was encouraging the student-athlete to be more receptive to coaching and referenced Bible verses about workers, teachers, parents, and slaves serving their masters,” the statement said. “Adams immediately addressed this with the team and apologized.”
The school didn’t say who would fill in for Adams as coach for the Big 12 tournament. Texas Tech (16-15, 5-13 Big 12) is the ninth seed and plays West Virginia on Wednesday night in Kansas City, Missouri.
MLB will not discipline White Sox pitcher following investigation
Major League Baseball will not discipline Chicago White Sox pitcher Mike Clevinger, the league announced Sunday,
after an investigation that began in 2022 could not determine that the pitcher violated its joint policy on domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse. Clevinger, 32, was accused by a former partner of physical abuse and that he threw a wad of used chewing tobacco at their child. MLB began its investigation last fall and the White Sox were not aware of the allegations when they signed Clevinger to a one-year, $12 million deal on Nov. 27.
