When Paula Cole raises her radio hit question, "Where have all the cowboys gone?" at the Beale Street Music Festival this May, she just may find that all the Memphis cowboys, at least, went to the Mid-south Music Festival the weekend before. Just like Oscar speculatio­ns, it's tempting to predict who the winner will be in the battle of the spring festivals. In an ideal world, both should triumph.

50 years ago — 1973

LONDON – Liza Minnelli and Desi Arnaz Jr. said in London yesterday they plan to marry soon. Desi, son of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, and Liza, the daughter of the late Judy Garland and star of the film "Cabaret," arrived in London for a five-day visit.

75 years ago — 1948

HOLLYWOOD – Loretta Young and Ronald Colman Saturday night collected Academy Awards and began a oneyear reign as the queen and king of Hollywood. "Gentleman's Agreement," an outspoken denunciati­on of antisemiti­sm, was named the best film of 1947. Miss Young upset the dopesters who had tabbed Rosalind Russell as the winner, and walked away with an Oscar for her role as the Swedish farm girl who ran for office in "The Farmer's Daughter." The award was one of the biggest surprises in Academy history. 100 years ago — 1923

LITTLE ROCK – That a viaduct will be built at the Crittenden County end of the Memphis Harahan Bridge was assured today when Gov. Mcrae announced to The Commercial Appeal correspond­ent that he would sign the Brookfield bill. "You can tell the people of Arkansas and Tennessee that I will sign the bill as soon as it reaches my office," said the governor.

125 years ago — 1898

NEW YORK – The Norwegian steamer Nordkyn, which arrived this morning from Hamburg, brought 25 tons of smokeless gunpowder for the United States government.
