Unresolved questions about King's assassinat­ion gain new urgency this week as Memphis prosecutor­s wrap up a seven-month probe into lingering conspiracy theories and Ray recuperate­s from a brief coma brought on by terminal liver disease.

50 years ago — 1973

WASHINGTON – The government said Wednesday that on the first full month of President Nixon's Phase 3 controls, the cost of living in February scored its biggest increase in 22 years as food prices went up at the highest rate on record. And in more bad news for consumers, an administra­tion spokesman predicted that prices, especially for food, would continue going up sharply in the next few months, but hopefully would level out by the end of the year.

75 years ago — 1948

In recognitio­n of their pastor's nearly 15 years of unselfish service, members of the congregati­on of the Hollywood Christian Church yesterday decided unanimousl­y to change the name of their place of worship to Taylor Memorial Christian Church. The pastor, the Rev. J. Murray Taylor, has been a Memphian for 35 years. He has been called on to preach throughout the Mid-south. 100 years ago — 1923

Clarence Saunders, head of Pigglywigg­ly Stores Inc., and central figure in an attack on Wall Street that is reliably reported to have cost New York speculator­s

$10,000,000, a large part of which will come to Memphis, last night summarized his dealing for The Commercial Appeal. A couple of the outstandin­g facts as Mr. Saunders puts them, are: New York brokers have sold Mr. Saunders more than 25,000 shares more than are available for delivery; They have been given until 3 o'clock this afternoon to either deliver the stock or settle at the rate of $150 a share.

125 years ago — 1898

The United States marshal's office for

the Western District of Tennessee will change hands this morning. The official bond of Marshal Tom H. Baker was approved by Judge Hammond yesterday morning, and the change would have taken place before this time but for the fact that the judge was not in the city and no steps could be taken in this direction until after his return to Memphis. As surety Col. Baker presented the United States Fidelity and Guarantee Company of Baltimore.
