HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL AREA RANKINGS
The boys high school basketball season is officially over.
Two Memphis-area public school basketball teams competed for a state title last week with one coming back with the gold ball. Here's the final boys basketball power rankings.
1. Overton (33-11): The Wolverines won their first ever basketball state title last week and are the No. 1 team in the final boys basketball rankings. Seniors Jailen Hardaway, Xavier Alexander and Jordan Frison helped Overton finish its season on a seven-game winning streak.
2. Briarcrest (33-3): The Saints, featuring Jaye Nash, Cooper Haynes and Jacob Gazzo, finished runner-up to Brentwood Academy in the Division II-AA state title game two weeks ago. 3. Douglass (28-9): The Red Devils finished runner-up to Alcoa, 59-58, in the Division I 2A state title game last week. Tyler Johnson was one of two seniors on the team, with Douglass returning a lot of talent for next year. 4. Memphis East (23-11): The Mustangs fell to Independence 78-58 in the 4A semifinals. Alijah Curry led the Mustangs during their state tournament appearance, averaging 20 points and 11.5 rebounds.
5. Horn Lake (29-2): The Eagles reached the Mississippi boys high school basketball 6A semifinals, losing to Northwest Rankin.
6. Olive Branch (20-4): The Conquistadors' season ended in the MHSAA boys basketball 6A semifinals against Brandon.
7. Ridgeway (18-13): The Roadrunners,
led by Brian Carter and Emmanuel Allen, reached the 3A TSSAA boys basketball semifinals. They lost to Haywood, 57-51.
8. Power Center Academy (24-8): The Knights' season ended to Giles County in the 2A quarterfinals. Nick Wiggins led Power Center Academy in its lone game, scoring 27 points and collecting nine rebounds in the 70-68 loss.
9. Fayette-ware (25-8): The Wildcats come in at No. 9 after losing to Haywood, 67-62, in the sectional round on March 6.
10. Collierville (18-13): The Dragons stunned District 15-4A, grabbing a district title over Southwind. Led by senior guard, TJ Mcneal, they fell to eventual state champions, Overton 73-71 in the Region 8-4A semifinals. Reach Wynston Wilcox at wwilcox@ gannett.com and on Twitter @wynstonw__.
