Top Memphis-area football games

- Wynston Wilcox Memphis Commercial Appeal USA TODAY NETWORK – TENNESSEE

We're down to only six Memphis area teams in the TSSAA football playoffs and four games featuring area teams. Houston travels to play at Germantown in a rematch of the Week 3 thriller that ended with a Germantown win, 14-13, aided by a late blocked field goal.

Here are the other top games in the Memphis area in the quarterfinals round this week.

Game of the Week Houston (9-2) at Germantown (12-0)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Houston finally has its rematch against Germantown.

The two will meet at Germantown for a rematch of Week 3's Region 8-6A clash between the two, which Germantown won 14-13. Don't expect this one to be anything like the previous matchup. Chandler Day is leading the Houston offense during its nine-game win streak, which is averaging 41 points per game since the loss. Germantown's defense will still be a problem. The Red Devils have allowed 20 or more points just twice this season.

Expect this to come down to the final possession.

Wilcox’s pick: Houston 28, Germantown 27

Southwind (12-0) at Henry County (11-1)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Southwind hasn't lost a game this year, and that's largely due to 5A Mr. Football semifinalist Kelvin Perkins. The quarterback has helped to give the Jaguars one of the most explosive offenses in Class 5A with a dangerous passing game. But a road playoff game at Henry County will no doubt pose the toughest test yet for Jaguars. Can Southwind extend its historic season to the TSSAA semifinals?

Wilcox’s pick: Southwind 28, Henry County 27

Covington (10-2) at Dyersburg (12-0)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Covington suffered two losses this season and Dyersburg was one of them. The Chargers were shut out in Week 3, 24-0. In that game, Skylan Smith had just 48 rushing yards, his second-lowest total this season. As Smith goes, the Chargers go and they'll need a performance like his 192 yards and two touchdowns a week ago.

Wilcox’s pick: Dyersburg 24, Covington 14

Fairley (9-2) at

Memphis Business Academy (8-3)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

The only games in which Fairley has allowed points has been in its two losses. The nine wins are all shutouts. Fairley lights the scoreboard up and holds teams at bay. The Bulldogs have reached the quarterfinals for the second time since 2019. Will they be able to keep their win streak going to advance to the semifinals?

Wilcox’s pick: Fairley 37, Memphis Business Academy 12
