25 years ago — 1998
The rabbi's first hands-on holiday activity was to cook up a Model Matzah Bakery so kids learned about Passover while baking their matzah. Next he proclaimed Rosh Hashanah by assembling a Shofar Factory. He didn't just blow the ram's horn, he helped the children make one. Then, to impress upon children the symbolic value of olive oil at Hanukkah, he showed them how to press their own oil. Sunday, Rabbi Levi Klein continued to carve out a reputation as one of the community's most imaginative religious teachers. Under his direction, a 6-foot block of ice was chain-sawed into a glistening menorah that — the rabbi hopes — won't melt for at least eight days.
50 years ago — 1973
BLUE CHRISTMAS — The TV commercial beamed from Seattle urged viewers to telephone in their orders for Christmas gifts, and in North Vancouver, B.C., that's exactly what 7-year-old Tommy Mcdonald did. Tommy, who is hospitalized from an auto accident, wanted to give his grandparents something nice for Christmas. Instead, he lost his telephone, his parents canceled the order and he has been put to work making something for his grandpa and grandma.
75 years ago — 1948
Major League Baseball leagues turned their thumbs down on a minor league proposal to ban television and radio network broadcasts. Lippy Durocher and Fred Fitzsimmons will appear before Happy Chandler today.
100 years ago — 1923 WASHINGTON – Letter carriers on the rural routes will be given all of Christmas as a holiday under a decision reached by Postmaster General New. Carriers in the cities will be given the usual half holidays.
