Looking Back at 2023
Homeownership is at the core of what makes our country, our city, and our neighborhoods strong. And there is data to support that. When we invest in ourselves, so to speak, we all benefit.
I knew this before 2023. But the last year only served to reinforce these truths. When I look back at my year as Memphis Area Association of REALTORS® (MAAR) President, I know I have been blessed by the opportunity to serve homeowners, future homeowners, residential and commercial REALTORS®.
Obviously, when we look at everything that happens in a year we can’t speak in absolutes. There will be some good, some bad, some indifferent. And almost always, the feeling that it went by faster than the year that preceded it.
In 2023, the residential market again was in transition. At the start of the year, sellers had more leverage than buyers. As the year progressed, this began to balance out. Interest rates were higher than they were a couple of years ago, sure, but they were still historically low.
As far as our community, I am positive about what is to come for Memphis. I believe the city is making more strides every year.
I’m also optimistic about our country – yes, even in a Presidential Election year – and I continue to believe America is the best country on earth.
As 2023 draws to a close, I’m also proud to report that MAAR not only provided daily service to consumers and members but engaged with the community at many levels.
As always, it was exciting to help people find their dream homes and their first homes. Memphis is full of so many vibrant neighborhoods. Ours is a city with character and soul, and that means there are many unique places to call home.
Memphis, by the way, routinely ranks as one of the friendlier cities in the country. Our southern hospitality is alive and well.
We are a diverse city, and it is encouraging that more and more we view that as the advantage that it is.
It has been my pleasure to write these weekly columns and I hope that they have provided some help and guidance. Even if it was just a tip on improving the look of your kitchen or enhancing your outdoor living space.
I always knew how valuable a REALTOR® could be to anyone going through the home-buying or home-selling process, but I have been impressed by the professionalism of my colleagues as they adjust to changes in the industry to better serve consumers.
Our 2024 President Scott Bettis takes over this space next week. He is smart and brings a wealth of experience. I know you will enjoy the weekly conversations he will have with you.
My sincere thanks for the opportunity to serve and I hope you and yours have a blessed 2024.
