A plan to remove grades 6-8 from E.E. Jeter School drew hot protests from some Shelby Forest residents as a package of sweeping changes was proposed Thursday for Millington-area schools. Sending Jeter’s middle school students to Woodstock Middle School proved to be the most controversial of the changes proposed by the Shelby County Schools staff. In two public forums, district administrators unveiled proposals for school closings and consolidations, $20 million in expansions, renovations and a new school, redrawn attendance zones, and new grade structures. 50 years ago — 1974
Rep. Palma Robinson, R-jonesboro, the chief sponsor of legislation to establish an independent medical school in East Tennessee, Monday submitted voluminous documentation to back his position. Robinson gave his fellow legislators three volumes of data containing more than 600 pages dealing with the plan for the medical facility at East Tennessee State University, consultants’ reports and proposed facilities and personnel.

NASHVILLE – A bill to repeal state taxes on colored oleo margarine cleared the state House of Representatives Friday
and needs only the signature of Governor Browning to make it law. Margarine is made from vegetable oils including those from cottonseed and soy beans, both of which are produced in West Tennessee.
100 years ago — 1924
Headquarters of the American Cotton Growers Exchange will be moved from Atlanta and Dallas to Memphis, probably some time during the early part of this year, it became known last night. Sales offices have been maintained at Atlanta, and demonstration and executive offices at Dallas.
