HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – On your map, place a dot beside this small Alabama town near the Mississippi border and extend from it a straight line northeastward to another dot on your map in Canada that marks Windsor, Ontario. The path, 650 miles long, will follow the classic directional sweep of tornadoes. On your map, mark it Tornado Alley, 1974. It is the death route of the most disastrous series of tornadoes in the United States in a half-century.
