Thank, cherish, love and respect your mom

- Lynn Norment

Being a mother is not for the weak. The title and honor carry with it the need for strength of heart, body and soul, as well as tenacity, patience and love.

Of course, the rewards of motherhood are profound and plentiful. You bring a life into the world, one who is devoted to you and who loves you unconditionally. That’s just one of the great rewards of being a mother, yet there are plenty of “buts.”

Many moms will acknowledge that the role of motherhood is challenging. It is filled with stress, uncertainty, frustration, disappointment and so much more.

Mothers must be resourceful, flexible, positive and forgiving. Nevertheless, most mothers tough it out and make it through just fine. That’s because women are strong beings who can adapt to change and circumstances, who can and will get the job done regardless of the challenges.

And keep in mind, there is no manual on how to be a good mother. It’s trial and error and learning as you go.

Mothers deserve respect from their children

“Motherhood is a joy for the most part,” says the mother of two adult children. “But it is not always a peaceful walk in the park. There is no guarantee that your kids will always love and respect you, not while they are children and not when they are grown up.”

Lack of respect is a sore spot for this mother who was born and reared in the Memphis-area. She emphasizes that she has never experienced disrespect from her children, but she has witnessed it repeatedly among other mothers.
