25 years ago — 1999

Boyle Investment Co.'s donation to Germantown of 39 acres along the Wolf River is the latest addition to what could be a major park setting in the suburb's northwest corner. The land between Wolf River and Wolf River Boulevard near Riverdale gives Germantown about 70 acres of riverfront property along the city's border, reaching to Poplar Estates Park at the suburb's western line.

50 years ago — 1974

Singer and former Memphian Kay Starr will join Danny Thomas and five other entertaine­rs Saturday at this year's Shower of Stars, an annual fundraisin­g benefit for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Fred P. Gattas, chairman of the event, expects the Mid-south Coliseum to be packed for the talents of comedian Alan King, singers Ray Price, Jerry Vale, Gladys Knight and the Pips, and Miss Starr. 75 years ago — 1949

Stables in six states of the Mid-south have sent 116 entries to the Oak Grove Hunt Club and Germantown Civic Club charity horse show to vie for blue ribbons, silver trophies and cash awards Saturday and Sunday in the Germantown Athletic Field ring.

Besides Tennessee, states represente­d with fine saddle stock in the event include Mississipp­i, Alabama, Arkansas and Missouri.

100 years ago — 1924

Here's the ill wind blowing somebody good again. The Colonial Country Club loses its efficient and widely popular steward and the Claridge Hotel gets a promising room clerk. If Evan R., sometimes known as "the Duke of" Jenkins makes half the friends for the Claridge that he has for the Colonial, the hotel crowd can count him as a whale of a good investment.
