Small Business Saturday kicks off shopping season
POTTSTOWN >> Holiday cheer was in the air Nov. 23 as the Christmas season kicked off in Pottstown.
Lights and reindeer could be seen along High Street as carols were sung and families made their way around to different shops during Hometown Holidays and Small Business Saturday.
The annual event, which serves as fun start to the holiday season, offered a variety of entertainment for families to enjoy throughout the day. A Story Walk and Scavenger Hunt starting at the Pottstown Downtown Improvement District was available for kids to enjoy.
Along the way, coloring crafts were offered at Beverly’s Pastry Shop while gift wrapping services were available at Steel River Playhouse. Kids were also welcome to take part in a tree decorating party happening at Red Cloud Kung Fu and a gingerbread house decorating contest held at Operation Backpack.
“We were asked if our space could be used to hold the gingerbread house contest and we of course said, ‘No problem.’ We love to participate in anything for Pottstown,” said Lisa Heverly, who was helping run the gingerbread house decorating contest. “I think today there’s all kinds of stuff going on.”
Families also had a chance to have their picture taken with Santa Claus, meet with Mrs. Claus and could even take a free ride to the Pottstown Carousel by trolley.
“I think it’s important because we’re building community and we’re letting other people know outside of Pottstown and here that there’s always lots of fun stuff to do here and that it’s a safe place and they can come out and enjoy the beautiful stuff that’s going on downtown,” said Heverly.
The holiday festivities gave residents the opportunity to explore downtown small businesses while enjoying all the holiday season has to offer. Small Business Saturday, a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities, was incorporated into the day’s events.
Small businesses in the area including Blue Zen Wellness Collective, Grumpy’s Handcarved Sandwiches, Studio 36, Lily’s Grill and more were offering discounts to customers for shopping small.
Later in the evening, guests could enjoy even more activities including a wine tasting event at Grumpy’s and a food and wine sampling at the Pottstown Downtown Improvement District.
More events are planned for downtown throughout the remainder of November and December.
