Junior Groth sets Kutztown sprint record in 60 meters

- By Bill Arsenault For Digital First Media

It appears that junior Kelly Groth is going to have a big season sprinting for the Kutztown women’s track team.

Groth, from Audubon and a Methacton High grad, kicked off the indoor season for the Golden Bears by finishing first in both the 60 meter dash and the 200 meter dash at Lehigh’s Fast Times Before Finals meet on Dec. 7-8 in Bethlehem. Her time in the 60 was a personal best and a school record 7.73 and her time in the 200 was 26.07. Both are PSAC qualifiers.

Groth finished 10th in the 60 (7.86) and 14th in the 200 (25.97) in the PSAC Indoor Championship last year as a sophomore and was seventh in the 60 (7.88) and 11th in the 200 (25.87) as a freshman. That 200 time is a personal record.

“Kelly’s record in the 60 comes as no surprise,” Kutztown coach Ray Hoffman said. “When you show up every day and work your tail off good things are going to happen.”

The coach said that Groth decided to make a name for herself when she walked onto the campus as a freshman three years ago.

“Kelly surrounds herself with good people, has outstanding teammates to work with every day and holds herself accountable to do all the little things,” Hoffman said. “The best part is that we have the rest of this year and all of next year, too.”

Kutztown returns to the track Saturday when it hosts the Golden Bear Invitational.
