Sheriff Deputy David Kelly promoted to corporal
NORRISTOWN » Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputy David Kelly was promoted to corporal and ceremony conducted by Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office command staff at the Montgomery County Courthouse Friday morning.
Like many MCSO deputies and command staff, Kelly is military veteran with a law enforcement background.
During his near-decade long enlistment in the United States Army, Kelly served two tours in Iraq and led several infantry units as he rose through the ranks to Sergeant First Class.
Upon his return from the war, Deputy Kelly became a Plymouth Township police officer in 2007 and graduated from the Montgomery County Municipal Police Academy. He also served for a year in the Pennsylvania National Guard and returned to the guard in 2014, where he continues to serve as a staff sergeant in charge of a 20-man infantry platoon.
During his tenure with Plymouth police, Kelly became a department firearms instructor, field training officer and a mentor for new recruits in addition to serving on the regional SWAT team and County Drug Task Force.
As a firearms and field training officer at the Montgomery County Police Academy, he continues to train cadets who go on to serve law enforcement agencies throughout the region.
In 2014, Deputy Kelly brought his 10 years of military experience and 7 years of law enforcement experience to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
Within in a year of his arrival, Kelly was selected by his peers to serve as Deputy-In-Charge for Courtroom #11 and later Courtroom #2, and in 2017 he was again chosen, following a selective process, to serve in the Warrants Division.
While serving with the sheriff’s office, Kelly earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Penn State University and graduated with honors from the Pennsylvania Deputy Sheriff Basic Training Waiver Program.
In addition to courts and warrants, Kelly has also served in the Motorcycle Division and County Emergency Response Team.
