10 Years Ago This Week – 2011 The Minster ACME team moved on to the ACME district championsh­ip with a 3-2 victory over Wapakoneta in the semifinal. The Wildcats trailed 2-0 heading into the fifth frame, but plated three runs to eventually secure the victory. Adam Niemeyer went the distance from the mound in the victory, allowing just two runs on three base hits and striking out seven batsmen.

25 Years Ago This Week – 1996 The St. Marys American Legion baseball team strung together 12 runs in the seventh and eighth innings to post a 2011 triumph on the diamond over their counterpar­ts from Van Wert. Burke Granger led the St. Marys crew with a triple, single, and five RBI, while Minster’s Josh Clune went 4-for-7 with four RBI and St. Marys standout Jeff Dieringer ended the night with three singles and a run batted in. With the win, St. Marys evened their record at 14-14 on the summer campaign.

50 Years Ago This Week – 1971 Former St. Marys football standout Tim Fortney secured a tryout with the Boston Patriots of the National Football League. Fortney previously signed a conditiona­l contract as a free agent with the Patriots, and had been residing back in St. Marys rehabilita­ting a broken leg which he suffered in his final collegiate game with the Miami Redskins. Fortney was a three-year letterman at Miami and was the teams’ leading rusher, scorer, and second in pass receptions in 1969.
