No. 1 Fort Loramie takes down Cardinals

NEW BREMEN — Fort Loramie earned the ranking as the No. 1 team in Division IV in the first state poll released this week and the Redskins reaffirmed that ranking on Tuesday night, defeating New Bremen 69-30 in girls basketball non-conference action.

The Redskins (11-0) jumped out to a 9-0 lead, with four different players scoring in the opening minutes.

New Bremen (5-4) got on the board around the two minute mark when Abi Powers stole the ball and laid one in to make it 9-2.

But Fort Loramie kept pouring it on.

Cara Meyer drained a long two from the left side to make it 11-2 and then Riley Heitkamp hit a triple on the right wing to make it 14-2.

The Redskins opened the first quarter on a 9-0 run and finished the quarter on a 9-2 run.

The Cardinals got back in the scoring column early in the second quarter, with Chloe Bornhorst nailing a 3-pointer from the left corner to make it 20-5.

Kaylee Freund then stole the ball near half-court and raced for a layup to make it 20-7.

But Heitkamp answered with a three-ball from the right wing to make it 23-7.

The Cardinals struggled with ball control throughout Tuesday’s game, turning the ball over 21 times in the first half.

Near the end of the half, Fort Loramie added six points with threes coming from Heitkamp and Skyler Albers on back-to-back possession­s and the Redskins led 37-11 at the break.

The Cardinals started the third quarter strong, cutting Fort Loramie’s lead to 44-23, and forcing the Redskins to take a timeout.

New Bremen outscored Fort Loramie 15-13 in the third quarter, but the Redskins held a 50-26 lead after three quarters played.

In the fourth, the Redskins managed to settle into their half-court sets, executing time and time again.

Fort Loramie finished the game on a 19-4 run to earn the 69-30 win.
