Redskins fall to Riders over weekend

- By MIKE FRANK EL Sports Editor

ST. MARYS — The comforts of home are always welcome.

St. Marys played on its own floor for the first time in two weeks on Saturday afternoon, and collected a 65-42 win over Fort Loramie in nonleague basketball action at the Horseshoe.

The game also concluded a very crowded stretch for the Roughriders, who were playing their fifth game in eight days.

The previous four were all on the road, and St. Marys had gotten wins in three of them — beating Elida, Minster and Bath.

A narrow lead after one quarter turned into a much more comfortable 17-point lead by halftime on Saturday. They pushed it over 20 points in the third period, and rolled down the stretch.

Coach Dan Hegemier said “This was a very nice way to end” the run of games. He noted that the team showed patience and “took what was there” against the Redskins.

Austin Parks, who announced his verbal commitment to Ohio State on Sunday afternoon, spent Saturday racking up 29 points. Evan Angstmann had 18 points, including four three-pointers.

For the Redskins, Caleb Maurer had 13, Ty Ruhenkamp scored 12 and Ethan Keiser scored 10.

A three-point play, then a steal and score by Maurer put Fort Loramie up for a bit at the start.

Angstmann hit a jumper from the side with 5:50 to play, then Kyle Steininger followed with a three. About 90 seconds later, Angstmann also went long range.

The rest of the period was back and forth, with Parks getting a score in the post, a slam dunk, and two free throws. On the Redskins’ end, Keiser kept things close with a pair of three pointers. Going to the second, St. Marys led 14-12.

Loramie got scores by Keiser and Ruhenkamp, but Parks had two scores in between to even things out.

A series of passes led to a three by Angstmann. He then spotted up another and hit that as well. Brayden Sullivan set up Parks to boost the Riders’ lead to 10 points, 26-16.

Logan Eilerman scored at the midway point of the quarter. Fort Loramie would get just one more basket in the rest of the half, however.

Parks set up Angstmann for a scoop shot, then the sophomore guard hit a 3-pointer. Angstmann then repaid

the big man with a pass that Parks jumped up and stuffed through. With the Riders now up 33-18, Fort Loramie called timeout with 2 1/2 minutes to play.

A scoring exchange was followed by Sullivan capping off the first half scoring with two from the free throw line.

Parks was responsible for the first four scores of the third period on the Riders’ end, with the Redskins held to one basket by Maurer.

Angstmann and Sullivan counted scores by the Redskins as the gulf widened to 20 points at 49-29.

A free throw by Parks with 90 seconds left got the Riders to 50.

Senior Ryan Meier then hit a jumper in the lane to the delight of the crowd, and Sullivan got a tip-in score.

The final period saw the Redskins hit threepointers by Ruhenkamp, Lane Frilling and Maurer, but it only slightly affected the margin.

Parks had a pair of three-point plays (basket and free throw), while Reineke hit from long range, and another senior, Steininger, scored the day’s final points.
