Cardinals earn share of title with win
NEW BREMEN — New Bremen battled back from a 15-point third quarter deficit to pull off a 55-53 overtime victory over Fort Recovery on Friday night to earn a share of the Midwest Athletic
Conference title.
First half and early third quarter shooting woes set New Bremen back on Friday, trailing 21-15 at the half, and 36-21 late in the third quarter.
New Bremen’s David Homan hit a free throw with 1:33 to end Fort Recovery’s 6-0 run to put the game at 36-22.
Two possessions later, Homan made a nice pass to senior Reece Busse underneath for two points to make it 36-24.
Nick Alig then scored on a reverse layup to cut the deficit to 10 points and the mood in the gymnasium switched to hopeful.
A pair of made free throws by Aaron Thieman put the Cardinals down by single digits as the quarter ended.
Homan scored on a right side baseline drive, Thieman hit a pair of free throws and a three by Alig near the left wing capped off a 14-0 run by New Bremen as the Cardinals trailed just 36-35.
Fort Recovery’s Caleb Evers broke the
Cardinals run with a bucket down low, but Alig answered with a made three near the top of the key to tie the game at 38 apiece, the game’s first tie since 7-7.
Fort Recovery’s Cale Rammel answered that with a left corner 3 of his own to put the Indians back out in front at 41-38.
Trailing by four, Busse scored down low to make it 42-40. He was later fouled and made a free throw to cut the lead to just one.
Fort Recovery’s Owen Jutte scored down low for the Indians to put them in front by three.
With 2:55 left in the fourth, Alig connected on a corner 3 to tie the game at 46.
