Grand Lake Health System to hold annual health challenge

- From staff reports

The Grand Lake Health System will be starting up the Grand Lake Health Challenge once again for 2023, with plans to get things going by January.

The Grand Lake Health Challenge is a program meant to help individuals achieve their health goals as well as improve their lifestyle overall for their own health. This also allows people to work together to reach their goals and achieve weight loss gains that they haven’t been able to reach before alone.

People looking to participate are asked to join two-to-seven person teams, with each member agreeing to go to weigh-ins at set times by Grand Lake, or at least report their weight loss. The first mandatory weigh-in is scheduled for Jan. 10-12 in order to properly start the challenge.

While anyone is able to join, there are a few rules set in place for participants for 2023. Any children or young adults wanting to participate must have a guardian’s consent in order to join, as well as have a physician approve working towards the program. Anyone that has received bariatric surgery recently is not recommended to join the program, and pregnant individuals will be excluded form team totals and prizes at this time. January, May and September are mandatory weigh-ins, though people are expected to weight themselves at home for the other months.

The program is also hosting the Road to Fitness Challenge 2023 as well, with a list of races available for people to participate in for points throughout the year. Anyone that reaches certain point goals can expect to receive prizes for participating in the challenge.

In-person educational meetings will also be hosted within St. Marys, with five different ones being implemented for this year. The first will be on Jan. 10 to kick off the event, while the others are scheduled for March 14, May 23, Aug. 8 and Oct. 3.
