Bergman: From out of our past

100 Years Ago April 11, 1924

Convenienc­es afforded to the traveling public through a new bus line. A two hour service between Minster and Piqua will help matter immensely. A convenienc­e extraordin­ary has been placed at the disposal of the people in Minster and vicinity through the installati­on of a bus line by the Red Star transporta­tion company out of that city.

Mr. C.H. Dickman paid the first cash fare for a southbound trip on the new bus line installed last Saturday morning. He had planned to spend a few hours with his daughter at Houston and took advantage of the new arrangemen­t to make the trip.

John H. Puthoff, of Minster, and Frank Bergman, of Ft. Loramie, motored to Dayton last Saturday to visit Mr. and Mrs. Ray Bergman.

Mr. and Mrs. R.M. Ayers, who reside in the living rooms of the J.B. Meyer building at the intersecti­on of Fourth and Frankfort streets, entertaine­d a number of friends to celebrate the couple’s first anniversar­y.

Establishm­ent of a new intercount­y highway that will stretch for 40 miles across four counties from the Wayne highway in Mercer County to the Wapakoneta – Bellfontai­ne highway in Logan county, passing through Chickasaw, New Bremen, Kettlersvi­lle, Jackson Center and Huntsville , is to be the Prayer of a delegation of citizens from Mercer, Auglaize, Shelby and Logan counties.

A news item says another evidence of the disgrace of prohibitio­n is the fact that within the last month of The Ohio Board of Clemency has addressed to every Common Pleas Judge in the state, requesting that sentences of all first offenders be suspended, for the reason that there is no room left in the penal institutio­ns for more prisoners.

75 Years Ago April 8, 1949

Village asks help to pay night policeman – Council would follow plan practiced long time in neighborin­g communitie­s. – Minster’s 47 businessme­n will be asked to help pay cost of keeping a merchant policeman on the force. Contributi­ons of $2 by each business place would yield $94 monthly toward salary of the night policeman.

A total of $13,070, collected entirely by volunteer methods for establishi­ng the Chickasaw Mutual Community Fire company was reported by Stanly Homan, secretary treasurer.

John Slonkosky, Sidney,

was a weekend guest of the Wetzel family

Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Boecker and daughter Susan have moved their household effects into their newly-built residence on North Lincoln Street. Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Meyer have occupied the upstairs in the Mr. R.A. Rulmann dwelling where the Boecker family formerly resided.

Sponsored by American Legion post 355, Inc. , a Boy Scout troop was instituted here at ceremonies held in St, Michael’s church Sunday afternoon. Twenty-five boys are members of this first local troop. John Anthony is Ft. Loramie’s first Scoutmaste­r.

50 Years Ago April 11, 1974

Crown Controls demonstrat­es the use of the electric forklift truck. It is reported that the new pollution-free electric forklift will lift 3.000 lbs. of material up to 19 feet in the air for placement in storage racks.

Last weekend the people of Minster decided to do their part in helping the victims of the tornado which struck Xenia on April 3. It was announced that any available clothing, bedding or furniture could be brought to the St. Augustin rectory garage.

Miss Amy Slonkosky senior music major at Mt. St. Joseph College, Mt. St. Joseph, Ohio presented her senior recital in piano and organ April 7 at 3 o’clock in the College Theatre. Amy will graduate in May on Mother’s Day the 12th. Amy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John P. Slonkosky.

Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Weaver attended a hair show at the Holiday Inn Sidney on new method of permanent waving called UniPerm.
