Rajon Rondo’s trial on gun and drug charges moved to Aug. 1

Former Kentucky basketball star and Louisville native Rajon Rondo has had his Indiana trial on gun and drug charges pushed back seven weeks.

Rondo was arrested Jan. 28 in Jackson County for allegedly carrying a handgun unlawfully and possessing marijuana and other drug paraphernalia, court records show. His lawyer is challenging the constitutionality of his case, citing an impending ruling of a case in the U.S. Supreme Court.

Friday, Judge AmyMarie Travis of the Jackson Superior Court agreed to reschedule Rondo’s trial, setting it for 9 a.m., Aug. 1. In the Supreme Court case, United States vs. Zackey Rahimi, the Supreme Court is tasked with answering whether a domestic violence protection order disqualifies someone from the Second Amendment right to bear arms, according to a report from the American Bar Association.

Rondo was stopped by an Indiana State Police trooper for allegedly driving recklessly on Interstate 65 South. After pulling Rondo over, the trooper reported smelling the odor of marijuana, which led to a search of the vehicle. In conducting the search, the trooper reported finding a gun, marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Rondo had a protective order in place against him at the time of his arrest, the Courier Journal reported.

After the search, Rondo was arrested and taken to the Jackson County Jail. He placed a $700 bond and was released. A child who was in the car with Rondo at the time of the arrest was released to a family member.

Prior to joining the Kentucky, Rondo was a standout player at Eastern High School in Louisville. He was drafted in the first round by the Boston Celtics in 2007 and would go on to play 16 years in the NBA, winning two championships.
