Benton House of Covington is sponsoring an Alzheimer’s and Dementia Support Group. It will offer a supportive and educational gathering for families and friends whose lives have been impacted by Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Staci Williams who has a Master’s Degree in Gerontology and Kristi Carter from Longleaf Hospice, who has worked in Senior Healthcare for many years will coordinate the group. The group will meet on the second Monday of each month at the Benton House of Covington.

Sen. Tonya Anderson (D-Lithonia) will host a certificate and lapel pin ceremony to publicly recognize Vietnam War veterans from Rockdale, Newton and the surrounding counties for their service and selfless dedication to the United States. The ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. at Conyers First United Methodist Church. Vietnam veterans who are interested in participating in the ceremony may submit their application to participate in one of three ways. You may mail your DD Form 214 and NTA to the Georgia Department of Veterans Service (Certificates) at 2 MLK Jr. Drive SE, Atlanta, GA 30334. You also have the option to email your NTA and DD Form 214 to bz[email protected] or you may fax the NTA and DD Form 214 to 404-656-7006. The deadline to submit is Thursday, Aug. 31.

You’re invited to the annual homecoming service as Grace United Methodist Church, at 3145 Washington St., in Covington. Service begins at 10 a.m. The speaker will be the Rev. Dr. Quincy Brown. Immediately following the service will be an old-fashioned dinner served on the church grounds under the tents. The celebration will climax at 4 p.m.

Meet in downtown Covington at 3 p.m. for the Community Bike Ride the first Sunday of each month. Co-hosted by the Newton Trails, Main Street Covington and the Covington/Newton County Visitors Center, for more information visit http://www.newtontrails.org/community-bike-ride. The ride starts and finishes at the Square. The first loop is a gentle, family-friendly 4.5 mile roll around historic downtown Covington. Then, if you’re up for a little more fun, take a ride out and back on the scenic Eastside Trail.

The City of Covington wants your input. A community meeting will take place in support of the development of the city’s comprehensive plan. Attendees will be asked for their input on the city’s future. This is your opportunity to help plan what Covington will look like for future generations to enjoy.
