LADY DUTCH SEASON ENDS

SMA falls to Villa Maria 60-13

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch saw their season come to an end on Wednesday night with a 60-13 loss to Villa Maria in a PIAA sub-regional played at Hagerty Family Events Center in Erie. St. Marys Area was the District 9 Class AAAA champion and Villa Maria was the District 10 Class AAAA champion.

Villa Maria’s Cariss Dunham led all scorers with 14 points and was the lone player in double figures in the game.

Samantha Hayes was the leading scorer for the Lady Dutch with five points.

Villa Maria took control of the game early as they outscored St. Marys Area 32-3 in the first quarter.

Dunham led Villa Maria in the quarter with 11 points, Ainsley Thunell and Jayden McBride each scored six, Ava Waid made a pair of field goals, Lena Walz converted a three-point play, and Daniela Shaughness­y added a bucket. Hayes hit a three for the Lady Dutch.

St. Marys Area did not score in the second quarter, while Villa Maria added 16 more points to their lead.

Villa Maria led 48-3 at halftime.

Dunham hit another three for Villa Maria, Trunnel made a field goal and went one-for-two from the foul line, Rachel Majewski converted a pair of foul shots, and Walz, Waid, Shaughness­y, and McBride each made a bucket.

Villa Maria outscored St. Marys 8-2 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 56-5.

Walz, Sienna Dauer, Tori Mayes, and Sydney Pearson each made a bucket for the Villa Maria squad. Hayes made a field goal for St. Marys.

In the final quarter, the Lady Dutch outscored Villa Maria 8-4. Isabella Catalone hit a three for St. Marys, Maura Caskey made a field goal and went one-for-two from the foul line, and Abigail Erich added a bucket. Shaughness­y and McKenna Valone each made a field goal for Villa Maria.

The loss not only ended St. Marys Area’s season, it was also the final game for Lady Dutch seniors Jade Lindemuth, Kyla Johnson, and Samantha Hayes.

With the win, Villa Maria advances to face District 7 Class AAAA champion Beaver in the quarterfin­als of the 2021 PIAA 4A Girls’ Basketball Championsh­ip on Saturday at a site and time to be announced.
