The St. Marys Area boys’ tennis team was in action in Punxsutawney on Tuesday afternoon and brought home a 5-2 win over the Chucks.

“This win both showed how far we have come and also made it clear that we have to be committed to improving in practice,” said St. Marys Area head coach Tim Henry. “At the net, they were a bit more aggressive, so we were fortunate to win two of the three doubles matches. Ryan (Holjencin) made a huge difference in this contest. He used his variety of spins and smart shot selection to give us two important match wins. Dylan (Aiello) at number one was definitely challenged and managed to keep loose enough in the tiebreaker to eventually pull it out. Sherry is a good tennis player, as was shown by their win in first doubles, so Dylan’s finding a way to beat him is a quality result. Nate (Eckert) also deserves a lot of credit for picking up two points. Dominic’s steady presence at third doubles with Liam’s athletic ability were also nice to watch.”

At first singles, SMA’s Dylan Aiello won 6-2, 7-6(9) against Punxsutawney’s Braxton Sherry. At second singles, the Chucks’ Ben Gigliotti won 6-3, 7-5 against SMA’s Jon Chamberlin. At third

singles, Dutchman Ryan Holjencin won 6-2, 6-0 against Punxsutawney’s Aramy Ferrent. At fourth singles, Nate Eckert picked up a win for the Dutch, defeating

Zarin Spearing 7-6(5), 6-3.

At first doubles, the Punxsutawney duo of Braxton Sherry and Ben Bigliotti won 8-4 over SMA’s Dylan Aiello and

Jon Chamberlin. At second doubles, SMA’s Ryan Holjencin and Nate Eckert defeated Aramy Ferrent and Zarin Spearing 8-5. At third doubles, the Dutch duo of Dominic

Aiello and Liam Brem won 8-4 against Punxsutawney’s Josh Shoemaker and Alex Deppin.

“This team plays hard and produces the best tennis we can when it matters,” Henry said. “With a bit of luck and hard work on the practice court, we should be able to take some of the lessons this match taught us and be better come time for districts.”

St. Marys Area is scheduled to be back in action today when the Dutch play host to crosstown rival ECC in a 3:30 p.m. match.
