Shuey advances to men’s javelin final at U.S. Olympic Team Trials

The U.S. Olympic Team Trials for track and field got underway on Friday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, and continue through June 27.

The qualifying round of the men’s javelin throw was held on Saturday, with Johnsonbur­g native Michael Shuey advancing to today’s final with a fourth place effort. Each participan­t in the qualifying round had the opportunit­y for three throws, with the top 12 advancing to the final.

According to a press release on the USA Track and Field website, “stiff headwinds hampered distances as implements were pushed down prematurel­y” during the qualifying round.

Marc Anthony Minichello had the best throw of the day at 76.63m/251’5”. Second in the qualifying round was Curtis Thompson with a throw of 76.23m/250’1”. Caspers Williamson was third with a throw of 75.94m/249’2”. Shuey was fourth with a throw of 74.26m/243’8”.

Other throwers advancing to today’s final were Riley Dolezal, who was fifth in the qualifying round with a throw of 72.88m/239’1”; Zach Holland, who was sixth in the qualifying round with a throw of 72.45m/237’8”; August Cook, who was seventh in the qualifying round with a throw of 71.38m/234’2”; Tzuriel Pedigo, who was eighth in the qualifying round with a throw of 70.73m/232’; Brett Thompson, who was ninth in the qualifying round with a throw of 70.10m/230’; Denham Patricelli, who was 10th in the qualifying round with a throw of 69.37m/227’7”; Samuel Hardin, who was 11th in the qualifying round with a throw of 69.25m/227’2”; and Ethan Shalaway, who was 12th in the qualifying round with a throw of 68.04m/223’3”.

The final for the men’s javelin throw is scheduled to get underway at 7:15 p.m. Shuey will be the seventh out of the 12 to throw.
