D9 boys’ tennis singles tournament set to get underway Monday
The District 9 Class AA boys’ tennis singles tournament is set to get underway on Monday, and District 9 Tennis Chairman Aaron Straub announced that changes had to be made to the schedule for this year’s competition due to AP testing on Monday.
According to Straub, five out of the eight schools competing in the tournament have players taking AP tests. As a result, the format of the tournament was altered and the venue was changed.
The opening round and quarterfinals of the tournament are now slated to be played at Benzinger Park in St. Marys on Monday.
In the top half of the bracket, Punxsutawney
senior Ben Gigliotti will take on Brockway junior Johnathan Knox at 5 p.m. in the opening round and Johnsonburg senior Logan Krug will face DCC senior Colin Micknis at 4:15 p.m. The winners of both matches will play in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m.
Also in the top half of the bracket, ECC junior Anthony Messineo will face St. Marys
Area sophomore Liam Brem at 2 p.m. in the opening round and Bradford junior Max Shaw will take on Clearfield sophomore Ethan Evilsizor at 3 p.m. The winners of both matches will play in the quarterfinals at 5 p.m.
In the bottom half of the bracket, St. Marys Area senior Ryan Holjencin will take on Bradford senior Spencer Cornelius at 3 p.m. and Clearfield senior Isakk Way will face ECC junior Cameron Klebacha at 4:15 p.m. The winners will play in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m.
Also in the bottom half of the bracket, DCC junior Neel Gupta will face Johnsonburg senior Jack Elmquist at 4:15 p.m. and Brockway senior Jared Marchiori will take on Punxsutawney senior Zayin Spearing at 5 p.m. The winners will play in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m.
Semifinals will be played on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at a site to be announced. The championship match will follow at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
The first two rounds of the tournament will feature 10-game prosets, while the semifinals and finals will be the best two out of three full sets.
