Rotary Days Career Cruise focuses on careers in communities

-

After a couple years on hiatus, the Cameron County Rotary Club and the Community Education Center’s DISCOVER Partnership teamed up for another “Rotary Days Career Cruise”.

Ninth grade students from Cameron County and Austin High Schools participated. Students spent the morning networking and touring Embassy Powdered Metals, Emporium Hardwoods, and DCNR learning about local career opportunities and making connections with community members and potential employers.

Gordon Snyder from DCNR informed students that they “have a 40 year working window and should look at setting a foundation and building a career path that begins now”. He shared information about the PA Outdoor Corps, which is a summer program high school students can do to start building their skills and creating a network of professionals they can reach out to for career advice.

Students then joined together at the fire hall for lunch provided by the Rotary club. The afternoon session focused on Entrepreneurship. After an introduction lesson from the CEC, students went on a downtown walking tour stopping at CDH Designs, David A Woodring Photography, The Emporium Mercantile, Reid’s Napa Auto Parts and Emporium Nutrition. Business owners shared their career path to Entrepreneurship and offered advice for students who may want to be their own boss someday.

The day concluded with members of Rotary presenting information to the students on what Rotary is all about and what youth opportunities are available to them through RYLA and the Rotary 4 Way speech Contest.

This event was funded by The Cameron County Rotary Club and the Community Education Center’s (CEC) DISCOVER Partnership, a business and education partnership that is aimed at helping students “DISCOVER” what the region has to offer by forming connections between students, local companies and communities.

If your school or company is interested in participating in a similar event, please contact Amy Goode at the CEC (814) 781-3437 or cec@ communityedcenter.com.
