Representative Mike Armanini in seeking to petition PennDOT to approve a highway memorial sign for Dr. Betty Hayes in Force.
The commissioners quickly approved the request, and a draft letter of their support will be sent to PennDOT. Dr. Hayes is remembered for her many years of dedication to the area in the1940s, supporting miners living in deplorable conditions, and for her eventual triumph over the mining company exploiting their workers and providing substandard housing and medical care.
Another historic milestone for Ridgway will be the 150th anniversary celebration for the First Lutheran Church on May 20. The Commissioners approved the hanging of a banner on the Elk County courthouse lawn in Ridgway to advertise the celebration.
The commissioners approved two contracts for Children and Youth Services (CYS) in Elk County. The first was a renewal contract with Avanco, which provides the statewide computer system that links all counties in Pennsylvania together to share information. The second contract was with CONCERN Foster Care Provider of Potter County, who is housing an Elk County infant who will be transferred back to Elk County. This contract allows CYS from both counties to work together towards this end.
Both Jay and Ridgway Township applied and were granted $6,000 from the Liquid Fuel Tax Fund for road maintenance this summer by the commissioners. This is a standard, fixed amount per year that is allotted based on the population in the county to all municipalities.
The financial report was approved with no discrepancies, and the bills were approved for payment.
The next meeting of the Elk County Commissioners will be held on June 7, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Elk County Courthouse Annex, located at 300 Center Street in Ridgway. The public is invited to attend in person or through the Zoom network link on the Elk County website.
