Lady Dutch edge Lady Cardinals to bring home 37-34 win

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch fended off an attempted second half rally by the DuBois Central Catholic Lady Cardinals on Monday night in DuBois to bring home a 37-34 victory.

Jayssa Snelick led SMA with 12 points, while Kayley Risser was the leading scorer for DCC with 11.

DCC took an early lead in the game as the Lady Cardinals outscored the Lady Dutch 9-7 in the first quarter. Risser led the way for DCC with five points, while Jessy Frank made a field goal and Lexi Berta went twofor-two from the foul line. Izzy Catalone hit a three for the Lady Dutch, Molly Hanslovan made a bucket, and Snelick made a pair of foul shots.

SMA put 11 points on the board in the second quarter while limiting DCC to only two, with the Lady Dutch pulling ahead for an 18-11 halftime lead.

Snelick led St. Marys in the frame with four points on a field goal and a pair of foul shots, Catalone made a bucket and went one-for-two from the foul line, and Olivia Eckels and Maura Caskey each made a field goal. Frank scored DCC’s only points of the quarter with a field goal.

The Lady Cardinals edged the Lady Dutch 11-10 in the third quarter to make it a six-point game, 28-22, headed into the final eight minutes of regulation.

Faith Jacob and Risser each put four points on the board for DCC while Emma Elensky hit a three. Caskey led the Lady Dutch with five points on a two and a three. Alexa Schneider also made a three in the quarter for St. Marys and Snelick added another bucket.

In the final frame, DCC outscored SMA 12-9, but the Lady Dutch were able to hold on for the 37-34 win.

Berta led DCC in the frame with six points on a pair of threes, Jacob had four points on a pair of twos, and Risser added another bucket. Snelick scored her final four points of the night on a pair of twos, Caskey made another bucket, Eckels made a pair of foul shots and Catalone made one.

The Lady Dutch will return home for a Senior Night matchup with Bradford on Wednesday. The junior varsity game begins at 6 p.m. with the varsity contest to follow.
