Lady Crusader JV team takes home victory over Lady Dutch
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch junior varsity basketball team got off to a slow start in Saturday evening’s matchup against crosstown rival ECC. The Lady Crusaders did not have that problem and put 18 points on the board between the first two quarters while SMA only scored six. Elk Catholic continued to pull away in the second half for a 38-20 win.
Mya Pistner led the Lady Crusaders with 16 points on eight twos, scoring four points in each quarter of the matchup. Pistner was the only player to put up double figures in the game.
Lucia Hayes led St. Marys Area with five points, all of which were scored in the second half.
The Lady Crusaders held a 10-4 lead by the end of the opening quarter. Pistner led the way with her four points in the frame, and Alexa Chamberlin, Sofi Cherry, and Rachael VanSlander each made a field goal. Karli Frantz made a bucket for the Lady Dutch, and Emma Garstka made a pair of foul shots.
An 8-2 advantage in the second quarter gave ECC their 18-6 halftime lead. Pistner once again led the way with her four points, while Chamberlin and Lena Polaski each made a bucket. All of SMA’s points in the quarter came from the foul line as Garstka went two-for-three.
The third quarter saw the highest scoring by both teams, with ECC posting a 12-9 advantage to increase their lead to 30-15. Pistner and Chamberlin each put four points on the board on a pair of twos, while Gina Geci and Cherry each added a field goal. Zoe Romanic hit the game’s lone three with 1:41 left in the quarter for the Lady Dutch. Also for St. Marys, Rachael Braun and Hayes each made a field goal in the quarter and Sophia Surra went two-for-two from the foul line.
In the final quarter, ECC outscored St. Marys 8-5 for the 3820 win. Pistner scored her final four points of the night in the quarter while Cherry and Polaski made the other two buckets for the Lady Crusaders.
