St. Marys 11 & 12s finish second as a team at Area V Tournament
The St. Marys 11 & 12 year olds finished second out of 20 teams and had five wrestlers finish on the podium at the 2023 Area V Youth & JH Tournament in Clearfield over the weekend.
St. Marys had two first place finishers, along with one wrestler each placing second, third, and fourth.
Port Allegany finished atop the team standings with 105 points. St. Marys was second with 79.5 points, followed by Bradford in third with 69.5, Marion Center in fourth with 65 points, DuBois in fifth with 64 points, Brookville in sixth with 63 points, Punxsutawney in seventh with 60 points, Redbank Valley in eighth with 59.5 points, Clearfield in ninth with 45 points, West Branch in 10th with 39 points, Brockway in 11th with 38 points, Ridgway in 12th with 32 points, and Curwensville in 13th with 28 points. St. Marys was listed again tied for Union with 14th with 24 points and one second place finisher. Johnsonburg was 16th with 18 points, followed by Smethport in 17th with 12 points, Kane in 18th with nine points, and Clarion and Keystone tied for 19th with zero points.
65 pounds
Caden Cunningham entered the 65-pound weight class at the top seed.
Following a bye in the semifinals, Cunningham won a 7-0 decision over second seeded Peter Adams of Punxsutawney in the finals to finish first in the weight class.
75 pounds
Maximus Jovenitti entered the 75-pound weight class as the top seed and had a bye in the round of 16.
In the quarterfinals, Jovenitti took on Brookville’s Noah Boyer, with Jovenitti building a 10-0 lead in the first period before winning by fall in 1:55.
In the semifinals, Jovenitti faced fourth seeded Luca Morelli of DuBois, with Jovenitti winning by a 6-1 decision.
In the finals, Jovenitti was up against second seeded Lewis Sears of Marion Center, with Jovenitti winning by fall in 51 seconds to finish first in the weight class.
80 pounds
Peyton Wendel entered the 80-pound weight class as the fifth seed and took on fourth seeded Hunter Campisano of Punxsutawney in the quarterfinals. Wendel won the bout by a 2-0 decision in sudden victory.
In the semifinals, Wendel faced top seeded William Edwards of West Branch. Edwards went up 8-0 before coming up with the pin in 48 seconds.
Dropping into the consolation bracket in the consi-semis, Wendel won a 9-0 major decision over sixth seeded Marcus Gasbarre of Ridgway.
In the third place bout, Wendel and Campisano faced off again, this time with Wendel winning by a 6-2 decision to finish third in the weight class.
90 pounds
A pair of wrestlers were in action for St. Marys in the 90-pound weight class.
Zak Houk and third seeded Colten Wehler both had byes in the round of 16.
In the quarterfinals, Houck faced off against top seeded Bo Aveni of Clearfield. Aveni went up 18-4 in the match before winning by fall in 2:55. Wehler took on Poston Wolfel of Port
Allegany, winning by fall in sudden victory in a time of 5:00 with the match tied at 4-all.
In the semifinals, Wehler lost a 6-4 decision to second seeded T Dane Papa of Ridgway.
In the consi of 8 #2, Houck won a 7-2 decision over Jack Dale of Clearfield.
In the consi of 4, Houck won a 9-4 decision over Ridgway’s Anson Magnuson.
Wehler dropped into the consolation bracket in the consi-semis, and he and Houck had to face off. Wehler went up 8-2 in the bout before winning by fall in 2:30.
In the third place bout, Wehler was pinned by fourth seeded Brady Rosendahl in 1:41 to finish fourth in the weight class.
105 pounds
Greyson Meyer entered the 105-pound weight class as the second seed and had a bye in the round of 16.
In the quarterfinals, Meyer won by technical fall, 15-0, in 2:10 against Redbank Valley’s Brandon Smith.
Meyer then took on third seeded Gunner Zellman of Marion Center in the semifinals. Meyer went up 13-0 in the bout before winning by fall in 2:21.
In the championship bout, Meyer defeated top seeded Lance Davidson of DuBois by a 5-3 decision to finish first in the weight class.
135 pounds
Dominic Catalone entered the 135-pound weight class as the second seed and took on third seeded Mason Thompson of Curwensville in the semifinals. Catalone won by fall in 29 seconds.
In the championship bout, Catalone faced off against top seeded Xavier Stockman of Johnsonburg. Stockman won by a 2-0 decision, scoring the lone points of the bout on a reversal in the second period. Catalone finished second in the weight class.
