St. Marys 8Us finish ninth as a team at Area V Tournament

The St. Marys 8Us finished ninth out of 16 teams and had three wrestlers end up on the podium at the 2023 Area V Youth and JH Tournament in Clearfield over the weekend.

St. Marys had one third place finisher and two fourth place finishers.

Punxsutawn­ey finished atop the team standings with 108 points. Clearfield was second with 100, followed by Bradford in third with 82, Port Allegany in fourth with 57, Marion Center in fifth with 48.5, Redbank Valley in sixth with 47, Brookville in seventh with 36, DuBois in eighth with 35, St. Marys in ninth with 34, Union in 10th with 25, Bradford and West Branch tied for 11th with 18, Curwensvil­le I 13th with 15, Kane in 14th with 14, Johnsonbur­g in 15th with four, and Ridgway in 16th with zero.

45 pounds

Drew Hurd was seeded fourth at 45 pounds and faced off against fifth seeded Lawson Brothers of Redbank Valley in the quarterfin­als, winning by a 6-0 decision.

Hurd advanced to the semifinals, where he took on top seeded Owen Brink of Punxsutawn­ey. Brink won by fall in 44 seconds.

Dropping into the consolatio­n bracket in the consi-semis, Hurd pinned eighth seeded Karson Kozakovsky of Redbank Valley in 1:09.

In the third place bout, Hurd lost a 4-0 decision to third seeded Hoyt Mitchell of Port Allegany to finish third in the weight class.

50 pounds

Ezra Wykoff was the fifth seed in the 50-pound weight class and had a bye in the round of 16.

In the quarterfin­als, Wykoff took on fourth seeded Cove Codino of Johnsonbur­g, winning by fall in 1:28.

Advancing to the semifinals, Wykoff took on top seeded Brentley Maines of Punxsutawn­ey. Maines went up 10-0 before winning by fall in 1:53.

Wykoff dropped into the consolatio­n bracket in the consi-semis against sixth seeded Ezra Wilkinson of West Branch. Wilkinson went up 4-2 in the match, but Wykoff won by fall in 1:08.

In the third place bout, Wykoff faced third seeded Brayton Niece of Port Allegany. Wykoff was leading 6-3 when Niece won by fall in 1:55. Wykoff finished fourth in the weight class.

60 pounds

Kyle Dellaquila was the third seed at 60 pounds and had a bye in the round of 16.

In the quarterfin­als, Dellaquila faced sixth seeded Enzo Castellan of Brookville, with Castellan winning by a 14-7 decision.

Dellaquila had a bye in the consi of 8 #2 and then took on ninth seeded Westin Byers of Redbank Valley in the consi of 4, with Dellaquila winning by a 14-1 major decision.

In the consi-semis, Dellaquila won a 6-4 decision in tiebreaker 1 over fourth seeded Ryan Feely of Bradford.

In the third place bout, Dellaquila faced eighth seeded Milo Albright of West Branch, with Dellaquila winning by a 16-3 major decision to finish third in the weight class.

65 pounds

Trent Washburn was in action for St. Marys in the 65-pound weight class.

Washburn took on second seeded Bryce Stewart of Union in the round of 16, with Stewart winning by fall in 53 seconds.

Washburn had a bye in the consi of 8 #1 and then faced eighth seeded Brezlin Bruner of DuBois in the consi of 8 #2. Bruner was leading 4-3 when he came up with the pin in 43 seconds to win the match.
